About:

Providing local support, bridges to funding, and education for projects that benefit the community of North Kohala. From the start-up of businesses and nonprofits, to the creation of oral histories; earthquake repair and preparedness, NKCRC supports a wide range of efforts that value the North Kohala community.

The team at the North Kohala Community Resource Center has adopted a revolutionary way of governance that involves all team members in decision-making, its called Sociocracy. This leadership model allows them to share the title of Co-Director of Operations with specialties in finance (Michelle Kawai), programs (Leslie Nugent) and Administration (ʻEkela Kahuanui). While it is a new concept to the team, sociocracy has been used for decades in the Netherlands and has gained momentum in organizations across the US.

How it works is that unlike traditional majority rule (or boss’ decrees), Dynamic Governance uses innovative consent-based decision-making. It encourages collaborative thinking and saves time and energy because it doesn’t require consensus/agreement. Our ideas are melded together to create an outcome that we could not have envisioned alone.
