Surfing in early times had a profound religious significance.  It was called Ka Nalu- a study of the wave.  By living a life in and around the ocean, the surfer became aware of the power of the ocean and paid respect to it.  Most of all, he acquired the patience to wait for things to happen, rather than try to make them happen.
